Seven Seas Passengers Take a Salmon Farming Tour
June 11, 2007
British Columbia salmon farmers continue to look for innovative ways to spread the positive news about their sustainable farming operations. On Tuesday, June 5, 2007, Regent Seven Seas Cruises pulled in to Campbell River for the first time ever at the newly constructed cruise ship facility. Greeted by First Nations dancers, signal beach fires, and Campbell Riverites, passengers disembarked and for many it was their first time in British Columbia, Canada.
Building on the success of the weekly summer salmon farm tours, the BC salmon farmers extended an invitation to the cruise ship visitors to tour a farm. Guests for the first cruise ship salmon farm tour came from Boston, New York, Texas and New Mexico. Following a pleasant 45 minute boat ride through scenic waterways, circumnavigating beautiful Quadra Island, the visitors disembarked at Cyrus Rocks farm, a Marine Harvest facility. Farm staff made the guests feel welcome as they toured the entire operation and explained the process of farming salmon from start to finish.
"The tours are a great way to show people how we make a living in small coastal communities and provide them with a great product they can eat back home." said Stacey Stokes, BC Salmon Farmers."
And a tour wouldn't be complete without a taste of delicious farmed smoked salmon nuggets from another BCSFA member, Hardy Buoys Seafood. Guest comments included "I had no idea the industry was this big", "It's so clean and I love watching the salmon jump", "It is so beautiful here, the fish must love it."
